Mica processing and production involves the removal of the upper layer of the mineral. Mica has a 2:1 octahedral layer containing two tetrahedra. Mica is classified as dioctahedral, octahedral, or a mixture of both. Micas are usually characterized by the number of cations in each octahedral position. Biotite, muscovite, and chalcopyrite have all three octahedral positions filled. These materials exhibit dioctahedral crystalline structures with only two or three cations in each octahedral position. In dioctahedral mica, however, the cation composition is only half-filled.
